AI Can Create an Image. But Can It Tell Your Story?
AI-generated photographs are becoming incredibly convincing.
With the right instructions, a business can now create a professional-looking headshot, a spotless office, a perfectly staged team photograph or even an entire advertising campaign without anyone picking up a camera.
Clever? Absolutely.
But is it real? That’s a different question.
New transparency requirements under Article 50 of the EU AI Act are designed to make AI-generated and substantially manipulated content easier to identify. Generative AI providers must make relevant outputs machine-readable and detectable as artificially generated or altered.
It will not necessarily appear as an ugly logo across the photograph. The information may sit quietly behind the scenes as a digital marker that detection tools can recognise.
For businesses, this signals something much bigger.
Authenticity Is Becoming More Valuable
Your customers do not simply buy what you sell. They buy into the people, standards and story behind it.
They want to see:
- The real people they will be dealing with
- The actual environment where the work happens
- The care that goes into your product or service
- The personality behind the company
- Evidence that you genuinely do what you say you do
A beautifully generated photograph might attract somebody’s attention, but it cannot document the real pride of your team, the atmosphere inside your business or the years of experience etched into somebody’s hands.
That is where professional brand photography earns its keep.
Your Business Does Not Need to Look Perfect
This might sound strange coming from a photographer, but your business does not need to look artificially flawless.
It needs to look like the best, most confident and most honest version of itself.
When I photograph a business, I’m not there to manufacture a company that doesn’t exist. I’m there to uncover what is already worth showing.
The people.
The craft.
The character.
The details customers rarely get to see.
The little moments that make one business different from the next.
That cannot be created properly from a text prompt because it has to be experienced first.
AI Still Has a Useful Place
I use AI, and I believe it can be a brilliant assistant.
It can help businesses organise ideas, plan campaigns, improve grammar, develop shot lists and get past the dreaded blank page.
Used properly, it saves time and supports creativity.
But there is a big difference between using AI to help communicate your story and using it to invent one.
One assists the human being.
The other risks removing the human being altogether.
Trust Will Become the Real Currency
As generated content becomes easier to produce, customers will naturally become more cautious about what they see online.
- Is that the real team?
- Is that their actual workplace?
- Did they genuinely complete that project?
- Does that product really look like that?
Businesses with a strong library of genuine photography will be able to answer those questions without saying a word.
Real photography gives your marketing evidence. It creates familiarity before a customer contacts you and allows people to see the faces, standards and personality behind the name.
That builds trust, and trust is what turns attention into enquiries.
Real Will Stand Out
AI can create something polished in seconds.
What it cannot recreate is the banter between your team, the concentration of somebody who has mastered their trade, the controlled chaos of a working factory or that expression somebody gives when they finally relax and forget there is a camera nearby.
Those moments belong to your business.
They are yours because they actually happened.
The future of marketing will undoubtedly include AI, but I believe the strongest brands will use it intelligently while continuing to invest in real people, original thinking and authentic visual storytelling.
Because when everybody can generate something that looks impressive, being genuine becomes your biggest advantage.
Does Your Photography Still Represent Your Business?
If your current photographs no longer show the true quality, character and people behind your business, let’s put that right.
